2009 Annual Simsbury Youth Hockey
Holiday Invitational Tournament Rules

General Rules

This is an invitational tournament and we have brought teams together that can compete favorably. Under unusual circumstances, a team may be disqualified if the tournament committee discovers that there was an unfair advantage or misrepresentation of that team's level or ability.

No protest of the Referee's judgment will be allowed. Other protests, or rule violations must be referred to the tournament committee immediately and their decision will be final. Please note, the Connecticut Hockey Conference (“CHC”) has adopted a “Zero Tolerance Policy” concerning verbal abuse of referees, coaches players, and ice attendants.

Operational Rules

The tournament will be played under USA Hockey rules. The tournament committee will mail game sheets into the CHC at the conclusion of the tournament, unless otherwise requested by either coach.

The team listed first on the schedule is the HOME team and should wear white or their light jersey color. Please bring both jerseys to each game, should last-minute changes be required.

Coaches are responsible for picking up the locker rooms after each game.

At Westminster school, there are only two locker rooms; the locker room closest to the Zamboni door is the HOME locker room. When your team finishes dressing, please move all bags to one area of the locker rooms. Please be out of the locker room before the next team must enter.

At ISCC and Simsbury Farms there are four locker rooms and a rotation will be appropriately scheduled.

The tournament will furnish a time keeper and scorekeeper for each game. Score sheets will be provided by SYHA.

Anyone on the bench, besides the coaches, must wear helmets.

We intend to play three 12-minute periods at the Mite and Squirt levels and 15-minute periods at the PeeWee and Bantam levels. The SYHA Rink Manager at each rink will let the referee know how much time is available and will make the decision if period time modifications are necessary.

Teams and Awards

In a division with 4 teams, play will occur in a round robin format, with each team playing three games. At the end of round robin play, the two teams with the highest point total will advance to the Championship game.

In a division with five teams, one team as designated by SYHA, will play a fourth game so all teams have the minimum three game requirement. The extra game for the designated team, marked as such on the tournament schedule, will not count in the standings for that team. Statistics for the team playing against the designated team in their fourth game will count for the opposing team in the final standings.

In a division with six or more teams, two divisions will be formed. American and Canadian. Each team will play three games. After each team has played three games, the team with the most points in the American division and the team with the most points in the Canadian division will advance and play in the Championship game.

Results

Official tournament game results will be poster on white boards located at ISCC and Westminster. The SYHA web site will also display results that will be updated at the end of each day.

Winning

The largest goal differential for tie breaking purposes in any game will be six (6) goals.

Point System: Win = 2 points, Tie = 1 point, Loss = 0 points

Tie Breaking Rules to Determine Standings Position
If two or more teams have an equal number of points, their position in the standings shall be determined by the following tiebreaking format. If one tie-breaker establishes a position for one or more teams, each team is placed in the applicable position. Once a team is placed, the remaining tied teams shall start the tiebreaking process over again at step. 1a. The tie-breaker formulas are as follows:

1.  The results of the games played between the teams tied in the following order:
a.  Standings — Most points.
b.  Most wins (Head to Head).
c.  Differential — Subtracting goals scored against from goals scored in these games, the positions being determined in order of the greatest surplus.
d.  Quotient — Dividing the goals scored in these games by the goals scored against, the positions being determined in order of the greatest quotient. A quotient involving dividing by zero (0) has higher standing than a quotient from dividing by any number other than zero. Where two or more teams have no goal against and the quotient tiebreaker is required, the teams shall be ranked high to low in descending order of “goals for.”
e.  Most periods won — In the games played by each tied team, points will be awarded for each regulation period won (2 points) and for each regulation period tied (1 point). Positions shall be in the order of highest point total.
f.  Quickest first goal — The team that scored the quickest goal in their applicable preliminary round games shall be ranked highest.

2.  If after applying the formulas of 1 a, b, c, d, e or f the tie still exists, the results of all the games played by the teams tied in the following order.
a.  Most wins.
b.  Differential — Subtracting goals scored against from goals scored in these games, the positions being determined in order of the greatest surplus.
c.  Quotient — Dividing the goals scored in these games by the goals scored against, the positions being determined in order of the greatest quotient. A quotient involving dividing by zero (0) has higher standing than a quotient from dividing by any number other than zero. Where two or more teams have no goals against and the quotient tiebreaker is required, the teams shall be ranked high to low in descending order of  “goals for.”
d.  Most periods won — In the games played by each tied team, points will be awarded for each regulation period won (2 points) and for each regulation period tied (1 point). Positions shall be in the order of highest point total.
e.  Quickest first goal — The team that scored the quickest goal in their preliminary round games shall be ranked highest.

3.  If the above procedure does not break the tie, the teams shall use a shootout procedure as previously described.

Championship Game
1.    One five minute sudden death overtime period (4 on 4)
2.    Five man shoot out per team (Home team shoots first)
3.    Sudden death shoot out using different players until a winner is determined.
